What Star Wars Can Teach Us about Better Network Management
In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new Star Wars film coming out this holiday season.
Star Wars has been one of the most iconic cinema franchises of the past 50 years. What’s not to love? There’s action (countless light saber duals and battles), romance (Han Solo and Princess Leia), family conflict (Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father, after all), Political corruption, and an underlying plot of good versus evil.
Star Wars has taught us lots of different things.
It can also teach us about better network management. Think we’re crazy?
Here are five lessons Star Wars can teach us about better network management.
1. Have a Backup Plan
Remote backup and disaster and recovery planning are crucial components of any information technology strategy.
Darth Vader did everything he could to oversee the $193 quintillion (or there about) Death Star project, but struggled to protect his investment once complete. The inattention towards risk management not only allowed unauthorized personnel to access design blueprints, but to enter the star ship itself, and ultimately destroy it.
2. Trust a Wise Master
Luke Skywalker traveled to Dagobah to meet with Yoda to receive his official Jedi training. By this point, Luke had already accomplished a lot in his young Jedi career, but still had much to learn. He knew he couldn’t become a true Jedi master by himself.
Yoda was much like a Virtual CIO. He helped Luke gain focus of his goals and provided Luke with the knowledge and skills he needed to gain a technical advantage over the dark side.
The words of Jedi Master Yoda can be applied to any business.
“Size matters not,” – your small business CAN compete with larger companies if you have the right practices in place.
“Do or do not. There is no try,” – Trying does not equate to success in a competitive business marketplace. If you are not qualified or don’t have the time needed to take on something as important as information technology don’t do it. Leave it to a trusted vendor who can.
3. Don’t Find Yourself in a Situation Where “You Have a Bad Feeling About This”
Countless times throughout both the original and prequel trilogies, characters found themselves in situations where they said “I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”
Network security breaches, and new security threats can give anyone a bad feeling.
Just one network security breach can shut down your operation for days, or worse, result in business data and customer information being stolen.
A thorough approach to Anti-Virus can help mitigate these risks, and lead to better feelings.
4. Use the Force (Cloud Computing)
Ben Kenobi told Luke “The Force will be with you always.”
The same can be said about the cloud.
The cloud is always with you, 24/7/365. It allows you to access mission-critical documents anywhere, anytime.
ThrottleNet offers a wide variety of cloud solutions, including Cloud Desktop, Cloud Mail, Cloud Server and Cloud Voice products.
Even Yoda knows how useful the cloud can be – “My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is.”
5. Sometimes, it’s Necessary to Send in Bounty Hunters (or Outsource)
Sometimes, you just can’t go at it alone. Think about the time Jabba the Hutt hired Boba Fett to capture Han Solo. If it wasn’t for hiring Boba, there was no way the slow, sluggish Jabba could have had Han frozen in carbonite.
Think of what your business can and can’t accomplish alone. If Managed Network services would be better off left to an experienced provider, allowing you to focus on more important business goals, why wouldn’t you want to outsource this important business process to a trusted local company?
